The Johns Creek Environmental Campus - Most Aesthetically Pleasing 15-MGD MBR in North America

The Johns Creek Environmental Campus (JCEC) will employ leading edge membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology to treat wastewater to levels suitable for discharge into approved trout waters and the reuse water distribution system in north Fulton County, Georgia. This show-case plant will be a completely enclosed facility that has architectural elements that will give it the appearance of a historic mill complex located at the Chattahoochee River. The site will become a shared use park and nature center with the City of Roswell and including a cascading reuse water stream and pond with an interpretive historical walk that includes a replica of a covered bridge. This new facility will use low impact design elements that incorporate sophisticated noise and odor abatement features / technologies to limit the noise and odor to pre-construction background levels within 25 feet of the buildings. In addition, an educational lecture hall, displays and a teaching lab are being constructed to educate school children about wastewater treatment and the impact of water quality on the local environment and the Chattahoochee River. The JCEC, when completed, will be permitted for 15-mgd and will for a period of time be the largest MBR plant in operation in North America. This paper will detail the design process for this low-impact facility, which will include information on the architectural elements, process selection and sizing, on-line equalization, noise and odor abatement and community consensus building.
