Troubleshooting Activated Sludge Secondary Clarifier Performance With Simple Diagnostic Tests

Both mixed liquor flocculation and secondary clarifier shot-circuiting problems result in elevated suspended solids concentrations in activated sludge secondary effluents. Because corrective actions differ, it is important to identify which of these problems is causing high effluent suspended solids. A testing procedure, using the dispersed suspended solids and the flocculated suspended solids tests, is presented to distinguish between these problems. Three in-plant examples are given.
